An earthquake measuring at a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale hit northern Afghanistan, killing approximately 5,000 people.
Aproximately one thousand British bomber planes launched an attack on the city of Cologne, Germany.
Germany captured the island of Crete after what has been historically become known as 'The Battle of Crete'.
One of the most famous baseball players of all time, Babe Ruth, played his last baseball game.
The First Treaty of Paris was signed returning French borders to their 1792 extent.
Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to the island of Elba. He escaped from Elba on 26 February 1815 and became emperor again for one hundred days, until his final defeat at the battle of Waterloo.
French philosopher, Voltaire, died at the age of 84. Voltaire was his pen name, his real name being Francois-Marie Arouet. He was considered as one of the greatest thinkers of his time, however he remains a historically controversial persona, especially in regards to whether or not he was a true contributor to the progress of humankind.
19 year old Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen, France. She was beatified (made a saint) in 1909 by Pope Pius X.
