Formula car driver, Gilles Villeneuve, died after a crash during the qualifying lap for the Belgian Grand Prix.
Spanish-born singer, Enrique Iglesias, was born in Madrid, Spain. He is the son of famous Spanish singer Julio Iglesias and, mutli million album selling, singer himself.
German armed forces unconditionally surrendered to the allies.
French army forces fired upon and murdered thousand of anti French rule protesters in Algeria. The event is known as the Setif massacre. France apologized for the massacre in 2005.
British naturalist, Sir David Attenborough, was born in London, England. He is probably the worlds best known naturalists. He has created some of the most famous nature documentaries which he has written and presented himself.
One of the worlds largest movie studios, Paramount Pictures, was formed.
The Mount Pelee volcano erupted in the island of Martinique. The eruption destroyed the town of St. Pierre and killed over 30,000 people.
American, Harry S. Truman, was born in Lamar, Missouri. He was the 34th President of the United States and his presidency is marked in history as the only one to have ever ordered a nuclear attack on the earth (Hiroshima & Nagasaki) as well as his hard line policy against the Soviet Union.
