A 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Russian town of Neftegorsk killing over 2,000 people. |

Then 19 year old West German pilot, Mathias Rust, managed to fly his private plane all the way to Red Square in Moscow where he landed safely. He managed to evade all detection and was arrested by the KGB upon landing in Moscow. He was released a bit over a year after his arrest. |

Former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, was born in Brooklyn, New York. He gained enormous recognition due to the fact that he was mayor of New York City during the time of the infamous 9/11 terrorist attacks. |

Hungarian composer, Gyorgy Ligeti, was born in the town of Dicsoszentmarton, Transylvania. He is considered as one of the great composers of instrumental music of the later part of the 20th century. His music has been featured on numerous films by the late film director Stanley Kubrick. |

British author, Ian Fleming, was born in Mayfair, London. He is best remembered for writing the James Bond series of novels. |

Austrian composer, Leopold Mozart, died at the age of 68. He is best remembered now as the father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, even though he was an acclaimed composer himself. |
