The 'Battle of Crete' began as German paratroopers dropped over Crete. It was the first large-scale airborne invasion of the war, although the Germans had used parachute assaults in the invasion of France it was on a much smaller scale. The high cost in German lives during the invasion, put a stop in any further such airborne operation by the Germans throughout the rest of the war. |

The German battleship Bismarck sunk in the North Atlantic Ocean. Over 2,200 of its crew died. The ship was scuttled after it had suffered severe damage by the British ships that had been pursuing it. |

The first Liberty Ship, SS Patrick Henry, was launched. The liberty ships were cargo ships built by the United States during World War II. Overall 2,751 Liberty Ships were built with the purpose of transporting supplies from America to England during the war. As of 2006 two of those ships survive as ship museums and are still operational. |
