American singer, Janet Jackson, was born in Gary, Indiana. She is the sister of pop icon Michael Jackson and one of the most successful American singers. According to Billboard magazine, is within the top 10 most successful singers of all time.
Irish actor, Pierce Brosnan, was born in Drogheda, Ireland. He gained fame with the TV series 'Remington Steele' in the 1980's.
The first Academy Awards were presented in Hollywood, California. The first movie to win the best movie category was 'Wings'.
The Sedition Act was passed by the US Congress. Under the terms of the act, criticism of the government became a jailable offence. It was repealed in 1921.
The soft drink, root beer, was invented.
British writer, Edgar Allan Poe, married his 13-year-old cousin Virginia.
