The Channel Tunnel was inaugurated. It is the tunnel under the English Channel linking England and France.
American actor, George Clooney, was born in Lexington, Kentucky. He first appeared opn TV in 1984 in the short lived series E/R which was a very similar to the 1994 ER series, which catapulted him to international fame.
Greek comedian, Lakis Lazopoulos, was born in Larissa, Central Greece.
Italian educator, Maria Montessori, died at the age of 82. Her method of education is a very popular method of education around the world. She was the first woman to graduate from medical school in Italy.
The Prague Offensive, the last major battle of the Eastern Front, began.
The German zeppelin, Hindenburg, caught fire and was destroyed while it was docking with the dock at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The Zeppelin originally was designed to be filled helium, but due to an embargo on helium it was filled with the highly flammable gas, hydrogen. 36 died in the accident.
Italian actor, Rudolph Valentino, was born in Apulia, Italy. He was probably the first male sex symbol actor. He died at the age of 31, after he had undergone surgery for ulcer.
The Eiffel Tower officially opened during the Universal Exposition in Paris.
French Revolutionary, Maximilien Robespierre, was born in Arras, France. He was one of the most known leaders of the French Revolution.
