A Thai Airways passenger plane crashed into a mountain north of Kathmandu, Nepal, resulting in the death of 113 people.
A severe tornado struck the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, leaving 27 people dead in its path as well as property destruction of several hundred million dollars.
In Detroit, Michigan, Teamsters Union president Jimmy Hoffa was officially declared as a missing person.
A Delta Air Lines passenger plane crashed while landing in at Logan Airport, Boston, Massachusetts. 89 people died in the crash.
British novelist, Joanne Rowling, was born in Yate. She is the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series, which has gained international attention, won multiple awards, and sold over 375 million copies.
American actor, Wesley Snipes, was born in Orlando, Florida.
Japan Airlines was founded.
French pilot and writer, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, died at the age of 43. He was a French writer and aviator and is most famous for creating Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince). He disappeared on the night of July 31, 1944 while flying on a mission to collect data on German troop movements.
American actress, Geraldine Chaplin, was born in Santa Monica, California. She was the daughter of Charlie Chaplin and his last wife Oona O'Neill.
Hungarian composer, Franz Liszt, was born in Doborjan, Hungary. He was a virtuoso pianist and one of the most significant composers of the romantic period.
