Cypriot politician, Spyros Kyprianou, died at the age of 69. He was twice the president of the Republic of Cyprus.
1999 
The Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland joined the NATO alliance. All of them were previously members of the Warsaw Pact.

The first female priest was ordained by the Church of England.
1993 
A series of 15 bombs exploded in Bombay, India, resulting in the death of 300 people. The attacks are widely believed to have been the work of militant Islamic groups.
1987 
The musical, Les Miserables, premiered on Broadway.
1968 
The island nation of Mauritius achieved independence. The island had been colonized by the Dutch in 1638 but was later captured and became a British colony in 1810.
1960 
A fire at a chemical plant in Pusan, Korea resulted in the death of 68 workers.
1953 
American porn actor, Ron Jeremy, was born in Flushing, New York. He is one of the most famous porn performers of all time, having appeared in over 200 adult movies.
1951 
The comic strip, Dennis the Menace, made its appearance in newspapers across the USA for the first time.
1949 
American film director and producer, Rob Cohen, was born in New York. He is most known for his production of the hit movies The Witches of Eastwick, The Serpent and the Rainbow, and The Running Man, as well as his directing of the films XXX and The Fast and the Furious. In 2005 he directed the movie, Stealth, which proved to be one of the biggest, cinematic, financial disasters of all time.
1946 
American singer and actress, Liza Minnelli, was born in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of actress Judy Garland and film director Vincente Minnelli.
1928 
A dam collapsed in California and caused a severe flood which killed more than 600 people.
1921 
Italian businessman, Gianni Agnelli, was born in Turin. He was the founder and principal shareholder of the Fiat automotive company as well as the owner of the famous football club, Juventus.
1912 
The Girl Guides was founded in the United States. It was later renamed to the Girl Scouts of America.
1894 
Coca-Cola was sold in bottles for the first time.
1881 
Turkish politician, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, was born in Selanik (now the Greek city of Thessalonica). He was the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey.
