Vaclav Havel was elected to the position of president of the Czech Republic. He is also a renowned writer and was one of the most active anti communist intellectuals of then Czechoslovakia.

Two 10 year old boys were charged with the abduction and murder of a two year old boy in Liverpool, England.

In New York City, a truck bomb was detonated outside the North Tower of the World Trade Center, killing 6 and injuring over a thousand.
March
5th
Canadian athlete, Ben Johnson, was banned for life from athletics after failing drug test for a second time in his career.

12th
A series of 15 bombs exploded in Bombay, India, resulting in the death of 300 people. The attacks are widely believed to have been the work of militant Islamic groups.

16th
193 people died along the east coast of the United States in one of the greatest snow Blizzards ever recorded.

The Intel Corporation released the first Pentium type microchip. The first Pentium run at 60 MHz clock speed.

Actor Brandon Lee was accidentally killed during the filming of the movie, The Crow. He was the son of the legendary martial artist Bruce Lee.

19th
The 50-day siege of the "Branch Davidian" building outside Waco, Texas, USA, ended when the building was consumed by fire. 81 people, including the group's leader, David Koresh, died from either the fire or the FBI's gunshots.

Mexican comedian and actor, Mario Moreno Reyes, known as Cantinflas died at the age of 82 in Mexico City. He is considered as one of the greatest comedians to have ever graced the silver screen. Charlie Chaplin was said to have referred to him as the greatest comedy actor of his time. He was made famous worldwide after his participation in the hit movie "Around the world in 80 days". The film rights for his numerous movies are owned by Columbia Pictures, which still reports sizable profits from their distribution.

The web browser Mosaic version 1.0 was released. It was developed by the "National Center for Supercomputing Applications". Later on the leader of the development team, Marc Andreessen, along with Jim Clark went ahead to form Mosaic Communications, later renamed to Netscape Communications Corporation.

An IRA bomb exploded in the Bishopsgate area of London. Two people died as a result of the explosion in addition to massive property damage.

Over 300,000 people joined a protest march demanding the end of discrimination against homosexuals in the USA.

Eritrea gained its independence from Ethiopia. Eritrea is one of the youngest independent countries in the world.

Microsoft unveiled it Windows NT operating system. As the name suggests this was the company's grand move to the server/network operating system.

12th
A strong earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richtyer scale, occurred off the coast of Japan, resulting in a tsunami which caused massive destruction on the island of Okushiri as well as the death of more than 200 people.

Israel launched a massive attack against Lebanon in what was called 'Operation Accountability' by Israel and 'Seven-Day war' by Lebanon.

5th
The first ever, and most popular, trading card game, Magic: the Gathering, was released.

10th
The television series X-Files premiered on the FOX television channel. It run for 9 straight years and created a worldwide following of fans.

A strong earthquake hit India's district of Marathwada resulting in the death of tens of thousands of people.

The Battle of Mogadishu takes place when American armed forces attempted to capture officials of the warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid's organization, in Mogadishu, Somalia. As a result 18 US Army Rangers and about 1000 Somalis are killed in one of the worst disasters of modern times for the American Military.

Greek politician, Andreas Papandreou, began his third term as Prime Minister of Greece.

Italian film director, Federico Fellini, died at the age of 73. He is widely regarded as having been one of the most important and influential directors of all time.

American actor, River Phoenix, died from a drug overdose at the age of 23.
November
1st
The Maastricht Treaty takes effect, formally establishing the European Union.
December
4th
American musician, Frank Zappa, died at the age of age 52 from prostate cancer. He released more than sixty albums in his 33 year career in music and is widely considered as one of the most influential musicians of the rock era of music.
December
6th
American actor, Don Ameche, died at the age of 85.
December
7th
In Long Island, New York, Colin Ferguson, pulled out his gun while inside a railroad cart and started shooting people at random. He murdered six people and injured another 19 others. He was wrestled to the ground by passengers of the train and was later sentenced to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.

10th
The computer game, Doom, was released. It is one of the most popular videogames of all time.

11th
Forty-eight people were killed when a block of the Highland Towers collapsed near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

30th
Diplomatic relations between Israel and the Vatican were established for the first time.
