1999 |
American film director, Stanley Kubrick, died at the age of 70. He was one of the most critically acclaimed film directors of American 20th century cinema. He directed such classics as Spartacus, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove and 2001: A Space Odyssey. He was also the director of one of the most controversial films of the 20th century, A Clockwork Orange, which was one of the few non pornographic movies to ever receive an X rating in the United States (although it was later changed to an R rating). |

Iran and the United Kingdom broke off all diplomatic relations after a row over the controversial novel of writter Salman Rushdie. |

1984 |
United States forces launched an attack upon the Nicaraguan city of San Juan del Sur. In 1986 Nicaragua won a court case in the International Court of Justice which ordered the United States to pay Nicaragua approximately $12 billion in reparations for violating Nicaragua's sovereignty. After the courts decision, the United States withdrew its acceptance of the Court and claimed that it had no authority over such matters. |

American businessman, Michael Eisner, was born in New York. He was the CEO of the Walt Disney Company from September 22, 1984 to September 30, 2005. He is widely credited for turning the company back into profitability after it had been struggling for almost 2 decades. |

American inventor, Alexander Graham Bell, was granted a patent for the telephone. |

French composer, Maurice Ravel, was born in Ciboure. He is considered to be one of the major composers of the 20th century. most known for his orchestral piece, Bolero. |

Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian, was born in Amersfoort, Netherlands. He is widely acknowledged as one of the most important painters of the late 19th and early 20th century. |
