American entrepreneur, Paul Allen, was born in Seattle, Washington. Along with Bill Gates he was one of the founders of Microsoft and is one of the richest men in the World. He is also the owner of the NBA team, Portland Trail Blazers, and the NFL team, Seattle Seahawks.

A ferry boat sank off the coast of Ireland, resulting in the death of 130 people.
February
16th
Computer game designer, Roberta Williams, was born in Los Angeles. She is arguably the most influential female figure in the field of computer game design, having created some of the most influential computer games in the early days of the computer entertainment industry. She was the creator of the King's Quest adventure games and the co-founder of the Sierra Online computer games company.

The first ever 3D film was released. The film was called, Bwana Devil, whose plot revolved around the torment that railroad workers suffered in Uganda from the attack of lions.

Prime Minister of Spain, Jose Maria Aznar, was born in Madrid. He served as prime minister of Spain from 1996 to 2004 and was a strong supported of the US led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

American singer, Michael Bolton, was born in Connecticut.

Russian composer, Sergei Prokofiev, died at the age of 61. He is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.

Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, died at the age of 74. He was the de facto leader of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death in 1953.

Georgy Maksimilianovich Malenkov became premier and first Secretary of the communist party of the Soviet Union, after the death of Josef Stalin. He was a close political ally to Josef Stalin and Lavrenty Beria, a connection which eventually led to his forced resignation in 1957.

American porn actor, Ron Jeremy, was born in Flushing, New York. He is one of the most famous porn performers of all time, having appeared in over 200 adult movies.

The Motion picture academy awards were televised for the first time.

American athlete, Jim Thorpe, died of a heart attack at the age of 65. He is still considered today one of the most versatile athletes of all time, having won Olympic medals in decathlon and pentathlon, as well as playing professional football, basketball and baseball.

Irish actor, Pierce Brosnan, was born in Drogheda, Ireland. He gained fame with the TV series 'Remington Steele' in the 1980's.

Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

A tornado hit the town of Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, resulting in the death of 94.

American comedian, Tim Allen, was born in Denver, Colorado. Though a successful comedy actor, he is most known for his for providing the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the blockbuster animated film, Toy Story.

Greek general and politician, Nikolaos Plastiras, died at the age of 70.

American wrestler, Hulk Hogan, was born in Augusta, Georgia. He became famous as one of the most popular professional wrestlers in America, who later became an actor and entertainer.

Soviet, Nikita Khrushchev, became head of the Soviet Central Committee.

Nikita Khrushchev was appointed secretary general of the Soviet Union.

Laos gained independence from France.

Pakistan is renamed to The Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Russian writer, Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin, died at the age of 83. He was the first Russian to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1933. He is one of the most widely read Russian authors of all time.

Cambodia gained its independence from France.

England's national football team was defeated on home ground for the first time in their history. Hungary had broken England's undefeated home run which had lasted since 1901.

American actress, Kim Basinger, was born in Georgia, USA. She was a highly successful fashion model before she became an actress.

In the wake of strong anti-Communism in the United States, the General Electric company, announced that all communist employees would be discharged from the company.

American actor, John Malkovich, was born in Illinois.

American actor, Bill Pullman, was born in Hornell, New York. He is most remembered for his participation in the highly successful movie, Independence Day.

Soviet, Lavrenty Beria, died at the age of 54. He was a prominent figure of the Soviet communist regime and is most remembered as the head of the secret police who executed Joseph Stalin's great purge. After Stalin's death he was executed by Stalin's successors.

A railway bridge collapsed at Tangiwai, New Zealand while a fully loaded passenger train was traversing it. The accident claimed the lives of 153 people.
