Thomas Edison exhibited the kinetoscope, this was the first step towards today's cinemas.

17th
Soviet politician, Nikita Khrushchev, was born in Kursk. He served as Premier of the Soviet Union between 1958 and 1964 when he was removed from office and placed under house arrest for the remainder seven years of his life. (d. 1971)
April
26th
Nazi official, Rudolf Hess, was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He was as Adolf Hitler's deputy in the Nazi Party and became a controversial figure when he parachuted over Scotland in an attempt to sow the seeds of peace between Britain and Germany. He was subsequently arrested and tried in Nuremberg where he was sentenced to death. He was the sole remaining prisoner of the Spandau prison for 21 years, until his suicide in 1987. The prison was later demolished in order to avoid its becoming a shrine for neo-nazi's.

King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom was born in London. In 1936 he abdicated from the throne of England in order to marry the American divorcee, Wallis Simpson.
July
26th
English author, Aldous Huxley, was born in Surrey, England. He is considered as one of the most influential writers / philosophers of the 20th century and was widely characterised as the 'Leader of Modern Thought'.
November
1st
Nicholas II became Tsar of Russia after his father, Alexander III, dies. He was the last Tsar of Russia.
December
3rd
British writer, Robert Louis Stevenson, died at the age of 44. Considered as one of the greatest storytellers of all time, having written such classics as Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
