The football World Cup was stolen from an exhibition at Central Hall, Westminster, London. It was found in a park seven days later.

American actress, Holly Hunter, was born in Georgia, USA. She is most known for her roles in the critically acclaimed film, The Piano, and the blockbuster thriller, The Firm.

American film director, Spike Lee, was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He is one of the most noted directors in Hollywood, most known for his films that deal with social, political and racial issues.
1956 
Tunisia gained its independence from France.
1948 
American actor, John de Lancie, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is most known for his role as 'Q' on the various Star Trek series.
1945 
American basketball player and coach, Pat Riley, was born in Rome, New York. He is widely considered as one of the greatest NBA coaches of all time. He has been the head coach the NBA champion team five times, the assistant coach to another and a player for yet another.
1945 
American film producer, Rick Berman, was born in New York. He is most famous for his work as the producer of the Star Trek series.
1942 
Nazzi troops murdered over 3000 Jews in the town of Rohatyn, western Ukraine. The entire 'operation' was conducted within the span of one night.
1916 
The theory of relativity was published by the famed scientist, Albert Einstein.
1914 
The first ever international figure skating championship took place in New Haven, Connecticut, USA.
1899 
The first ever execution by electrocution of a woman took place. The woman was, Martha Place, who had been found guilty of the murder of her stepdaughter.
1890 
Italian tenor, Beniamino Gigli, was born in Recanati. He is considered as one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century.
1873 
Russian composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff, was born in Semyonovo. He is regarded as one of the most influential pianists and piano composers of the twentieth century, whose music was banned in the Soviet Union for many years.
1861 
A strong earthquake destroyed the city of Mendoza in the western part of Argentina. More than 5000 people died in the destruction.
1760 
A massive fire in the city of Boston, Massachusetts, destroyed more than 300 buildings.
