A coup against President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela took place. Chavez, who was restored to power within 48 hours, has often stated that it is his belief that the US administration of President George Bush was behind the coup attempt. |

Panathinaikos becomes the first Greek basketball team to ever win the European champions league. Panathinaikos defeated Barcelona in the Paris finals. |

1985 |
Albanian politician, Enver Hoxha, died at the age of 77. He was the leader of Albania from the end of the second world war, up until 1981 and was one of the last remaining believers of Stalinism, a belief which led to Albania's international isolation for many decades. |

1983 |
Mexican actress, Dolores del Rio, died at the age of 78 in Laguna Beach, California. She was a star in the Hollywood era of silent movies and one of the biggest stars of Spanish speaking Latin America for many decades. |

1979 |
Ugandan dictator Idi Amin was deposed. A reported (but not confirmed) 300,000 are believed to have been killed during his reign of power. He received asylum in Saudi Arabia, where he remained till his death. |

The Apollo 13 lunar mission was launched. The mission suffered severe technical malfunctions on the way which caused it to be cancelled and seriously jeopardized the lives of the crew, although the crew was able to return safely to earth. |
