American Actor, Robert Downey Jr., was born in New York city. In the late nineties his career was plagued by drug abuse, which apparently he has managed to kick during the last few years.
The North Atlantic Treaty was signed, creating the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
American actor, Anthony Perkins, was born. Famous for his part as Norman, in the thriller, Psycho.
A massive earthquake hit the area of Kangra, India killing over 360,000 people.
Los Angeles officially became a city.
US president William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia, He was the first US president to die in office. He was president for only a month.
