American gangster, Al Capone, was born in New York.

The Opel Motors company was founded by Adam Opel in Russelsheim, Germany.
February
25th
German born journalist, Paul Julius Reuter, died at the age of 82. He was born in Kassel, Germany, but became a British citizen in 1857 and it was there that he founded the Reuters news agency, which today is one of the major news agencies in the world.
March
20th
The first ever execution by electrocution of a woman took place. The woman was, Martha Place, who had been found guilty of the murder of her stepdaughter.
April
11th
Under the terms of the "Treaty of Paris", Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States of America.
June
3rd
Austrian composer, Johann Strauss, died at the age of 64. He was known as "the waltz king", and was responsible for popularizing waltz music. His most famous musical composition is that of "The blue Danube".
July
21st
American writer, Ernest Hemingway, was born in Oak Park, Illinois. He is widely acknowledged as one of the top literary figures of the 20th century who was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1954. He was suffering from depression and paranoia, which eventually led to his committing suicide.

13th
British film director, Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, was born in Leytonstone, London. He was one of the most influential film directors of his generation, who pioneered many techniques in the suspense and thriller genres.

Argentine writer, Jorge Luis Borges, was born in Buenos Aires. He is widely acknowledged as one of the most important Spanish-language literary figures of the 20th century.
September
13th
The first fatal automobile accident occured in the United States.
November
4th
Sigmund Freud's, The Interpretation of Dreams, was first published.
