A German submarine torpedoed and sank the cruise liner RMS Lusitania. 1,198 people died as a result. The Germans had claimed that the ship was carrying ammunition, a mistake, which hastened the entry of the United States in the First World War. |

American spy, Ethel Rosenberg, was born in New York. She and her husband, Julius, were members of the Communist Party and were both convicted and executed as spies in 1953. In later years decoded Soviet communications showed evidence that while her husband was certainly a spy, she may have not been involved in any acts of espionage, but was only aware of her husband's activities. |

American author, Arthur Miller, was born. He is considered as one of the great playwrights of the 20th century, having written such classics as "Death of a Salesman". He was also known for his marriage to Marilyn Monroe which lasted between 1956 and 1961. |
