During the course of World War I, tanks are used for the first time ever in a battle, the Battle of the Somme. The battles took place along the River Somme in northern France. Over one million soldiers died in the battle which lasted over four months and resulted in a stalemate. |

Italian politician, Aldo Moro, was born in Maglie, Italy. He is best remembered as the prime minister of Italy who was abducted and murdered by the terrorist group Red brigades in 1978. |

Russian monk, Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin, died at the age of 47. Considered by many a madman he was a highly controversial figure in pre Soviet Russia. Though his life was filled with controversy, he was close to Tsar Nicholas II, his wife and their only son, Alexei. He was assassinated by Nobles of Russia, because of the influence he had over the Royal Russian family. |
