The Patriarch of Alexandria, Petros VII, along with his company were killed when their helicopter crashed into the sea, outside Mount Athos, Greece.
2001 
Terrorists, using 3 hijacked planes, attacked the World Trade Center in New York City, The Pentagon, and crashed another passenger airliner in Pennsylvania. Approximately 3,000 died as a result of the concerted terrorist effort in what has been the worst terrorist hit in history.
1999 
Tennis player, Serena Williams, won her first Grand Slam tournament winning the US open. She was the first African American woman to win a Grand Slam tournament in 41 years.
1997 
Scotland voted to re-establish its parliament, 290 yearsafter its union with England.
1994 
American actress, Jessica Tandy, died at the age of 88. Her career while successful throughout her life saw a great resurgence after 1982. She won the academy award for best actress for her role in the hit movie, Driving Miss Daisy.
1989 
The iron curtain fell between the countries of communist Hungary and Austria. Thousands migrate to Austria and West Germany.
1965 
President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, was born in Damascus. He is the son of former president Hafez al-Assad.
1965 
American musician, Moby, was born in Darien, Connecticut. His birth name is Richard Melville Hall. He has enjoyed a huge pop career in the last decade which is rivalled by few other musicians.
1962 
Music band, The Beatles, recorded their first single, titled, Love Me Do.
1941 
Works commenced on the grounds where the American, Pentagon would be constructed.
1940 
American film director, Brian de Palma, was born in Newark, New Jersey. He is one of the most successful and respected directors in American cinema, having directed over 30 movie hits.
1931 
Mafia gangster Charles Luciano's hit men executed the boss of bosses of the American Mafia, Salvatore Maranzano.
1922 
The British Mandate of Palestine began. The Mandate of Palestine was a territory in the Middle East including the modern day territories of Israel, Jordan, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which the League of Nations (predecessor of the United Nations) entrusted the United Kingdom to govern after the end of World War I and the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, as a Mandate Territory.
1885 
English novelist, DH Lawrence, was born in Nottinghamshire, England. He was one of the most important, as well as controversial, English writers of the 20th century. In 1928 he wrote the novel 'Lady Chatterley's Lover', which sparked a row of criticism and banning which lasted more than 30 years later, but was also instrumental in combating the censorship laws which governed publications up until the 1960's.
