American writer, Sinclair Lewis, was born in Minnesota. He was the first American to receive the Nobel prize for literature.

Mark Twain's novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was published for the first time.
March
3rd
The American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) was incorporated in the state of New York.
May
22nd
French author, Victor Hugo, died at the age of 83. He is widely recognized as one of the most influential writers of the 19th century, having written such classics as 'Les Miserables' and 'The Hunchback of Notre-Dame'.
June
17th
The Statue of Liberty arrived in the harbour of New York City. It was given as a gift to the United States by the Paris based Franco-American Union. It was erected in its present position in October 1886.

Louis Pasteur successfully tested his vaccine against rabies on a boy who had been bitten by a rabid dog.

Footballer professionalism was legalized in Britain.

23th
American politician and general, Ulysses S. Grant, died at the age of 62. He was famous for being theleading Union general during the American Civil War. He also served as the 18th President of the United States.
August
29th
The first ever motorcycle was patented by, German engineer, Gottlieb Daimler. Daimler was a pioneer of internal-combustion engines and also one of the original founders of the company now known as Daimler-Benz AG, which is now part of DaimlerChrysler.

11th
English novelist, DH Lawrence, was born in Nottinghamshire, England. He was one of the most important, as well as controversial, English writers of the 20th century. In 1928 he wrote the novel 'Lady Chatterley's Lover', which sparked a row of criticism and banning which lasted more than 30 years later, but was also instrumental in combating the censorship laws which governed publications up until the 1960's.

In Montreal, Canada, rioting broke out when the government instituted compulsory smallpox vaccination.
November
11th
American general, George Smith Patton, was born in California. He was one of the leading military figures of World War II.
