Greek musician, George Dalaras, was born in Piraeus. He is considered as one of the best contemporary singers of Greek music. |

1943 |
President of Poland, Lech Walesa, was born in Popowo, Poland. He was one of the founders of 'Solidarity', the Soviet bloc's first independent trade union. He was also the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and won the 1990 presidential elections to become president of Poland. |

1939 |
The city of Warsaw surrendered to the invading armies of both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, 12 days after they simultaneously invaded Poland. |

1938 |
The Munich Agreement was signed by the countries of Britain, France, Nazi Germany and Italy. Under the terms of the agreement Germany was allowed to occupy the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia. It is often referred to as the 'Munich betrayal' because of the military alliance between Czechoslovakia and France as well as between France and Britain, which was totally disregarded. |
