The last of the Magdalen Asylums was closed in Ireland. Under the orders of the Roman Catholic Church the Asylums were originally created to help women who had turned to prostitution due to their background. In time and with the guidance of the church these institutions were turned to prison like establishments which to this day are another dark chapter in the history of the Catholic Church and an example of human cruelty. |

A Pacific Southwest Airlines passenger jet collided in mid-air with a small Cessna plane, causing it to crash in San Diego, California. All 135 passengers died in the crash, as well as the 2 passengers of the Cessna plane and seven people on the ground. |
