On November the 20th
Two powerful bombs exploded in Istanbul, Turkey destroying the office of the HSBC bank as well as that of the British consulate. 30 people died in the bombings and over 300 were wounded.
The Angolan civil was ends when the government and the UNITA rebels signed an agreement in Zambia, effectively ending a 19 year old blood civil war. The war, however, would reignite a year later to finally end in 2002, after more than 500,000 people had died in it.
The television movie, The Day After, was aired in America. An estimated 100 million people watched the film on that day.
Greek-Italian painter, Giorgio de Chirico, died at the age of 90. He is considered as one of the most influential painters of the 20th century who helped shape the Surrealism movement.
Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco, died at the age of 83. He emerged as Spain's leader after Spanish Civil War and remained its de facto leader until his death. For most his era is considered as a dark chapter of Spanish history, although a few historians credit him with keeping Spain neutral during the Second World War.
American actress, Sean Young, was born in Kentucky. She most known for her participation in the cult movies, Blade Runner and Dune.
The Princess Elizabeth married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey in London.
The countries of Romania, Hungary and Slovakia joined the Axis Powers.
The Ukraine was declared a republic. The republic stood until 1922 when the Ukraine joined the Soviet Union and was reasserted after the fall of the later in 1991.
