An Ethiopian Airlines passenger jet was hijacked and later crashed into the Indian Ocean. 123 people died in the crash.
German actor, Klaus Kinski, died at the age of 65. He is most remembered for his participation in the internationally acclaimed films, Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), and Fitzcarraldo (1982). He is the father of actress, Nastassja Kinski.
Terrorists hijacked and Egypt Air passenger flight heading from Athens to Cairo. After the plane landed in Malta, it was stormed by Egyptian commandos. 59 innocent people died in the gunfight that ensued.
A number of strong earthquakes hit Southern Italy, resulting in the death of over 4500 people.
The first episode of the cult science fiction television series Doctor Who, was aired on the BBC. It would remain in production until 1989.
The Life magazine was published for the first time. Previously there had existed a weekly humour publication under the name of Life, but it was discontinued amidst the Great Depression.
Harpo Marx, American comedian was born in New York. He was part of the Marx Brothers group, that marked the stage with its unique comedy style during the first half of the 20th century.
British actor, Boris Karloff, was born in London. He was one of the most famous horror actors ever to appear on the silver screen.
American outlaw, Billy the Kid, was born in New York. His real name was Henry McCarty and although he died at the age of 21 he is one of the most recognized names of the American west.
