Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, fell to Afghan Northern Alliance forces. Taliban forces had fled from the city the previous night.
2000 
Netscape Navigator version 6.0 was launched following two years of development. It failed however to capture any significant market share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index closed above the 1,000 mark for the first time in its history.

NASA launched the Apollo 12 which was the second manned mission to the Moon.

American politician, Condoleezza Rice, was born in Alabama. She replaced Colin Powell as United States Secretary of State when the later one retired on January 2005.

Greek musician, Yanni, was born in Kalamata, Greece. He is a worldwide famous instrumental music artist.
1948 
Prince of Wales, Charles, was born in Buckingham Palace. He is heir-apparent to the thrones of the United Kingdom. The Prince is also known for his marriage to the late Lady Diana and his more recent marriage to Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall.
1935 
King Hussein of Jordan was born in Amman, Jordan. He had ascended to the throne after his father abdicated in 1952.
1922 
The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) began its radio service in the United Kingdom.
1922 
Egyptian, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, was born in Cairo. He was the sixth UN Secretary-General, and the only one not to be re-elected for a second term in that office. His re-election was vetoed by the United States, supposedly because of a UN report that had been published which criticized Israel's military actions in southern Lebanon.
1889 
Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, was born in Allahabad. He was one of the most important leaders of the Indian Independence Movement and the first Prime Minister of India.
1840 
French painter, Claude Monet, was born in Paris. He is one of the most famous Impressionist painters. The Impressionism movement derives its name from the title of one of his paintings, Impression, Sunrise.
1805 
German composer, Fanny Mendelssohn, was born in Hamburg. She was the sister of composer Felix Mendelssohn.
565 
Byzantine Emperor, Justinian the Great, died at the age of 82. He is considered as one of the greatest leaders of antiquity.
