The first ever solar system outside our own was discovered by Astronomers.
American actor, Ben Affleck, was born in Berkeley, California. He became famous in the late 1990s, after his involvement (writing and acting) in the film Good Will Hunting.
Bahrain declared its independence. It had been under British governorship until the 1960's and was protected under the charter of the United Nations until its declaration of independence. UN protection became necessary because Iran had laid claim to the island.
The Woodstock Music and Art Festival opened at a dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York. It lasted three days and for many exemplified the counterculture of the 1960s and the hippie era. Most of the best known musicians of the time performed in the festival.
The Republic of Korea was established. It was recognized by the United Nations on December of the same year.
Indian Muslim politician, Muhammad Ali Jinnah was sworn in as first Governor General of Pakistan at Karachi. He is considered the father of the nation of Pakistan.
The Panama Canal opened to ship traffic. The first vessel to ever cross the canal was the cargo ship Ancon.
The amusement park of Tivoli Gardens, opened in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is the second oldest amusement park in the world that is still open today. The oldest is also located in Denmark.
The country of Liberia was formed in the African continent by a group of Freed American slaves.
Scottish writer, Walter Scott, was born in Edinburgh. He was one of the most popular writers of his time, who wrote such classic books as Ivanhoe, Rob Roy and The Lady of the Lake.
French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, was born in the city of Ajaccio on Corsica.
The city of Asuncion, capital of Paraguay, was founded by Spanish explorers Juan de Salazar and Gonzalo de Mendoza.
