US President Bill Clinton admitted that he had an 'improper physical relationship' with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
Nazi official, Rudolf Hess, died at the age of 92. He was second in command of Nazi Germany and is most of all known for flying to Mayhill army barracks in Glasgow, Scotland in an attempt to negotiate peace with England. He was arrested and then tried at Nuremberg, where he received a life sentence. He spent the remaining days of his life in Spandau Prison.
Two Soviet Aeroflot passenger planes collided in mid-air over the Ukraine. All 156 people on board the planes died in the crash.
French footballer, Thierry Henry, was born in Les Ulis. He is considered by many as the greatest striker of his generation and one of the greatest players of all time. He has long played for the British football club, Arsenal.
American tennis player, Jim Courier, was born in Sanford, Florida. He was the number one ranked player in the world during the end of the 20th century.
A ferryboat sank off the coast of Okinawa, Japan. 112 passengers drowned.
East German border guards killed an 18 year old man while he was attempting to cross over the Berlin Wall into West Berlin. He was the first victim of the wall.
Gabon gained its independence from the rule of France.
American cult leader, David Koresh, was born in Houston, Texas. He was the leader of the Branch Davidians religious sect, and proclaimed himself to be the final prophet. In 1993 the FBI laid siege on the Branch Davidian ranch at Waco, Texas. The siege ended up with the burning of the ranch and the death of 79 members of the cult, including Koresh himself.
American singer, Belinda Carlisle, was born in Hollywood, California. She is most known for having been the lead singer and founding member of the all girl music band, The Go-Go's.
American actor, Robert De Niro, was born in New York City. He is considered by many to be the greatest actor of his generation.
Bolshevik revolutionary leader Moisei Uritsky was assassinated.
Hollywood producer, Samuel Goldwyn, was born in Warsaw, Poland. He was one of the early pioneers of movie production in the Unites States and was one of the founders of the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation, which eventually became the well known Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production company. However, by the time the original company was renamed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, he was no longer a shareholder.
