The Battle of Romania began with a major Soviet offensive. The battle ended approximately one month later with a decisive Soviet victory.
Russian revolutionary, Leon Trotsky, was fatally wounded by a Soviet assassin in Mexico City. He had been living in exile since 1933.
American baseball player, Lou Gehrig, hit his 23rd career grand slam, a record still standing today. A grand Slam in baseball is a home run is hit while all bases are loaded.
American writer, H. P. Lovecraft, was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the author of fantasy, horror and science fiction novels and the creator of the Cthulhu Mythos (although the term was not coined by him). Although his novels did not receive a wide audience during his lifetime, they have persisted throughout the 21st century as lasting bestsellers and have attained the status of classics in the genre.
Polish writer, Boleslaw Prus, was born in Warsaw. He is considered by many as one of the most important Polish writers of the 19th century.
