A Delta Air Lines passenger flight crashed at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Texas, 137 passengers died in the crash.
1980 
Bombing of the Bologna railway station took place in Italy, resulting in the death of 85 people.
1976 
Austrian film director, Fritz Lang, died at the age of 85. He is most famous for his revolutionary movie, Metropolis. Metropolis was the most expensive silent film ever made and is a movie that is still studied by experts.
1934 
German president, Paul von Hindenburg died, after which Adolf Hitler became Fuhrer of Germany.
1932 
Irish actor, Peter O'Toole, was born in Leeds, England. He is best known for his performances in such classic films as Lawrence of Arabia and The Lion in winter.
1922 
Scottish inventor, Alexander Graham Bell, died at the age of 75. He was one of the foremost pioneers in the development of the telephone.
1870 
The world's first underground railway system began operating in London, England.
338 BC 
Philip the II of Macedonia defeated the armies of Athens and Thebes in the Battle of Cheronea.
