Scottish inventor, Alexander Graham Bell, was born in Edinburgh. He was one of the foremost pioneers in the development of the telephone.

24th
Salt Lake City, Utah was established by a group of Mormon pioneers.

26th
Liberia declared its independence. Liberia was founded by black American settlers in 1822 and had been considered an American colony up until its independence.
August
20th
Polish writer, Boleslaw Prus, was born in Warsaw. He is considered by many as one of the most important Polish writers of the 19th century.
September
5th
American outlaw, Jesse James, was born in Centerville, Missouri. He was one of the most famous outlaws of the old west era of the United States, and has since his death become a folklore icon.
October
1st
The Siemens AG & Halske company was founded by German inventor and industrialist Werner von Siemens. It is today the world's largest conglomerate company.
November
29th
17 Missionaries were slaughtered by Cayuse and Umatilla Indians in the area of present day Washington.
