British writer, Virginia Woolf, was born in London. She is widely considered as one of the most important literary figures of the 20th century. She is also considered as an icon of feminism, although it was not a term she wanted to be associated with.

President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, was born in upstate New York. He is the only US president to serve more than two terms in office and was the president of the United States during the Second World War.
February

Irish author, James Joyce, was born in Rathgar a suburb of Dublin. He is widely recognized as one of the most important writers of the 20th century.
March
22nd
Polygamy was outlawed in the United States.
April
27th
American author, Ralph Waldo Emerson, died at the age of 79. He was the founder of the Transcendentalism movement in literature.
June
2nd
Italian statesman, Giuseppe Garibaldi, died at the age of 75. He was a patriot and soldier who had led many of the military campaigns that brought about the formation of a unified Italy.

6th
More than 100,000 people where killed in the city of Bombay, India when a cyclone created massive waves that crashed into the city's harbour.

17th
Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky, was born in Lomonosov. He is acknowledged as one of the great composers of classical style music of the 20th century.
August
17th
Hollywood producer, Samuel Goldwyn, was born in Warsaw, Poland. He was one of the early pioneers of movie production in the Unites States and was one of the founders of the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation, which eventually became the well known Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production company. However, by the time the original company was renamed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, he was no longer a shareholder.

Irish politician, Eamon de Valera, was born in New York City. He was one of the most influential Irish political figures of the 20th century and one leader of Ireland's struggle for independence from the United Kingdom.

20th
Hungarian-born actor, Bela Lugosi, was born in Lugos, Hungary. He is best known for his portrayal of Dracula and his subsequent participation in the films of director Ed Wood.
