A stampede during the Stoning the Devil ritual in Mina, Saudi Arabia, resulted in the death of more than 360 Muslim pilgrims.

Mehmet Ali Agca was released from a Turkish prison after serving 25 years for attempting to assassinate Pope John Paul II in 1981.

American businessman, William Hewlett, died at the age of 88. He was the co-founder of the Hewlett-Packard Company.
1976 
British writer, Agatha Christie, died at the age of 86. She was the best-known mystery writer in history and is probably the best-selling author of all time. Her books have sold over 3 billion copies and have been translated in 103 languages. She published over 90 novels and also authored a multitude of theatrical plays. Her stage play, 'The Mousetrap' premiered in 1952 and is still running at Ambassadors Theatre in London, making it the longest running theatre play.
1964 
American entrepreneur, Jeff Bezos, was born in New Mexico. He is the founder, president and CEO of Amazon.com.
1960 
Canadian actor, Oliver Platt, was born in Ontario.
1960 
American basketball player, Dominique Wilkins, was born in Paris, France. He is considered as one of the best NBA players of all time although he won no title in the NBA, hw did win the European Clubs' Championship and the Greek Cup with the Greek team, Panathinaikos.
1944 
American boxer, Joe Frazier, was born in South Carolina. He was the world Heavyweight boxing champion and is considered one of the greatest boxers of the 20th century.
1916 
President of South Africa, Pieter Willem Botha, was born in the Paul Roux district of the Orange Free State. He was a staunch supporter of racial segregation and the apartheid system.
1915 
The United States House of Representatives voted down a proposal that called for giving women the right to vote. Women were granted equal voting rights in the United States in the year 1928.
1873 
Greek athlete, Spiridon Louis, was born in Marousi, Athens. He was the winner of the first modern-day Marathon at the 1896 Athens Summer Olympics.
