Portuguese footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo, was born in Funchal, Madeira.
Romanian footballer, Gheorghe Hagi, was born in Sacele. He is considered as one of the best players of the 1980's and 1990's and probably the best Romanian footballer in history.
American actress, Jennifer Jason Leigh, was born in Los Angeles.
The British newspaper, Sunday Telegraph, was published for the first issue.
Swedish football coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson, was born in Torsby. He was a highly successful football coach with a celebrated career in various European football clubs. In 2001 he was appointed as head coach of the England's national team, a post he held until 2006 when he retired from the position without having managed to win any title for the English national team.
American actress, Barbara Hershey, was born in Hollywood, California. She is most known for her role in the critically and commercially successful film, Hannah and Her Sisters.
British actress, Charlotte Rampling, was born in Sturmer.
American film director, Michael Mann, was born in Chicago. He is one of the most commercially successful directors of the 20th century having produced such hits as Starsky and Hutch and Miami Vice.
Charlie Chaplin released the movie, Modern Times. It was the last movie of the silent film era.
Greek politician, Andreas Papandreou, was born in Chios. He was one of the most influential figures of Greek politics in the late 20th century.
