Iraqi president, Saddam Hussein, gained 99.96% of the popular vote in Iraq's presidential elections.
1990 
Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the Cold War and the reforms he brought about in Soviet Russia.
1970 
Anwar Sadat became president of Egypt, a post he held until his assassination in 1981.
1946 
During the course of the Nuremberg Trials, Nazi second in Command, Hermann Goring, poisoned himself with a cyanide pill the night before his execution.
1945 
French politician, Pierre Laval, was executed on the charge of treason by the French government. He had served as prime minister of the Vichy government of France which collaborated with Nazi Germany after the invasion of France by the Germans.
1944 
President of Albania, Sali Berisha, was born in Vicidol, Albania. He was the first person to be elected president of Albania after the collapse of the communist regime in 1992.
1920 
American novelist, Mario Puzo, dwas born in New York City. He is most famous for his Godfather, novel.
1917 
Dutch dancer and spy, Mata Hari, was executed by firing squad for espionage. She was accused of being a spy for Germany during World War I and was found guilty by a French court which sentenced her to death by firing squad. To this day it remains a matter of controversy as to whether or not she was actually a spy or not.
1878 
The Edison Electric Light Company began operations. It was the forefather company of what is today one of the biggest companies in the world, General Electric.
1844 
German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, was born in Leipzig, Prussia. He is considered as one of the most influential modern day philosophers. (Modern day Germany).
