French politician, Pierre Laval, was executed on the charge of treason by the French government. He had served as prime minister of the Vichy government of France which collaborated with Nazi Germany after the invasion of France by the Germans.

Dutch dancer and spy, Mata Hari, was executed by firing squad for espionage. She was accused of being a spy for Germany during World War I and was found guilty by a French court which sentenced her to death by firing squad. To this day it remains a matter of controversy as to whether or not she was actually a spy or not. |

The Edison Electric Light Company began operations. It was the forefather company of what is today one of the biggest companies in the world, General Electric. |
