American actor, Larry Fine, died at the age of 72. He is best known for having been a member of the comedy act 'The Three Stooges'.

American athlete, Tim Montgomery, was born in North Carolina, USA. He was briefly the holder of the world record in 100 meters, but his record was later disqualified when it was revealed that he had been using performance-enhancing drugs.
February

British footballer, Gary Neville, was born in Bury, England.

22nd
American actress, Drew Barrymore, was born in Culver City, California. She was catapulted to fame when she participated in Steven Spielberg's film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

The legendary music album, Physical Graffiti, was released by the Led Zeppelin rock band.

American Muslim leader, Elijah Muhammad, died at the age of 77. He was the leader of the Nation of Islam from 1934 till his death. The Nation of Islam is an African American organization that preaches complete separation from white society.

A train crash in the underground station at Moorgate station of London resulted in the death of 43 people.
March
15th
Greek shipping tycoon, Aristotle Onassis, died at the age of 74. Born to a middle-class Greek family he was to become one of the most famous shipping magnates of all time and a name that is still synonymous to wealth and glamour.

King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, was shot and killed by a mentally ill nephew, the mentally ill nephew was later beheaded in public.

The Biological Weapons Convention which bans the production of biological and toxic weapons comes into effect.
April
29th
The last American citizens were evacuated from Saigon shortly before the city's tajeover by North Vietnamese forces. With the evacuation, came the end of the US's involvement in the Vietnam war.

Spanish-born singer, Enrique Iglesias, was born in Madrid, Spain. He is the son of famous Spanish singer Julio Iglesias and, mutli million album selling, singer himself.

American actress, Angelina Jolie, was born in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand.

The Suez Canal opened for the first time since its closure after the Six-Day War, almost eight years ago.

The Betamax videocassette recorder went on sale for the first time. it had been developed by Sony. While I enjoyed a hefty market share during the first two years of its launch, the format quickly fell out of favour and was overshadowed by the success of the VHS format.

An Eastern Air Lines passenger jet crashed at John F. Kennedy Airport, New York. 113 people died as a result of the crash.

Mozambique achieved its independence from Portugal.

Cape Verde gained its independence from the rule of Portugal. The islands that make up, Cape Verde were uninhabited when the Portuguese colonized them in 1456.

In Detroit, Michigan, Teamsters Union president Jimmy Hoffa was officially declared as a missing person.

South African actress, Charlize Theron, was born in Benoni. She has stared in such box office successes as The Devil's Advocate, The Cider House Rules, and Mighty Joe Young. In 2003 Theron won the Best Actress academy award for her role in the movie, Monster.

Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich, died of lung cancer in Moscow.

A coup d'etat took place in Laos, installing a communist government which is still governing the nation.

Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I, died at the age of 82. He was one of the most respected monarchs around the world and the 'Messiah' of the Rastafari movement. Under his leadership Ethiopia enjoyed a status of prestige around the world.

A follower of the imprisoned cult leader Charles Manson, named Lynette Fromme, attempted to assassinate U.S. President Gerald Ford. The attempt was thwarted by an agent of the secret service.

Papua New Guinea gained its independence from Australia.

Patty Hearst was arrested after a year on the FBI's Most Wanted List. A year earlier she had been abducted by members of the urban terrorist group SLA but later apparently joined the group and even participated in a bank robbery.

Colombian formula one driver, Juan Pablo Montoya, was born in Bogota where he was inducted into the world of racing by his father, who taught him the techniques of carting from a very early age.

American athlete, Marion Jones, was born in Los Angeles, California. She won five medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She, however, failed to win any medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Prince Juan Carlos became Spain's acting head of state, after dictator, General Francisco Franco's health deteriorated.

Italian film director, Pier Paolo Pasolini, was murdered at the age of 53. He was a highly controversial figure. His film Salo (finished at the same year as his death) is widely considered as the most controversial film of all time, deriving its theme from the book '120 Days of Sodom' by the Marquis de Sade.

Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco, died at the age of 83. He emerged as Spain's leader after Spanish Civil War and remained its de facto leader until his death. For most his era is considered as a dark chapter of Spanish history, although a few historians credit him with keeping Spain neutral during the Second World War.

Juan Carlos was declared King of Spain following the death of dicator Francisco Franco.

Suriname gained its independence from the Netherlands. It was formely known as Dutch Guiana and is the country with the least population in the South American continent.

A group of IRA terrorists took a couple hostage in Balcombe Street, London. The situation lasted for 6 days when the terrorists surrendered after they had realized that their demands were not going to be met.

American golfer, Tiger Woods, was born in California. He is ranked among the most successful golfers of all time.
