The Vatican abolished the 'index librorum prohibitum', which was a list of books considered prohibited for followers of the catholic faith. The list was originally instituted in 1557.

Czech athlete, Jan Zelezny, was born in Mlada Boleslav. He is considered as one of the greatest athletes to have ever participated in the sport of javelin throw. he won gold metals in the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games as well as a Silver in the 1988 Olympics.

American boxer, Mike Tyson, was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was the youngest man to win a heavyweight title belt and was at the time considered to be unbeatable. His career however was overshadowed by his personal life. In 1992, Tyson went on trial after being arrested on rape charges

The national team of England won the Football World Cup, defeating the team of West Germany with a score of 4-2 in overtime. The series was held in England and the final was played in Wembley Stadium. To this day (2007) it is the only international football title ever to be won my England.

South African Prime Minister, Hendrik Verwoerd, was stabbed to death during a parliamentary meeting. He was the main architect of Apartheid. The assassin, David Pratt, was declared insane and incarcerated in a mental institution, only to commit suicide a few months later.

American actor and comedian, Adam Sandler, was born in Brooklyn, New York.

Basutoland became independent from the United Kingdom and was renamed to Lesotho. It is a country on the African continent that is entirely land-locked and is surrounded by the Republic of South Africa.

LSD was declared as an illegal substance in the United States. During the 1950's and early 1960's it was available as an experimental psychiatric drug.

American actor, Luke Perry, was born in Ohio, USA. He is best known for his role in the TV series Beverly Hills 90210.

Iraqi terrorist, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was born in Jordan. He was the leader of an Islamic militant group in Iraq and was rumoured to be closely associated with Osama Bin Laden's Al-Qaeda terrorist network. He was killed during a raid in Iraq in June 2006.

A Greek ferry boat, the Heraklion, sank outside the island of Milos. Of the 247 passengers only 47 were rescued.

American animation pioneer, Walt Disney, died at the age of 65. He was the founder of the Walt Disney Company, one of the most recognized companies in the world. For years stories circulated that he was cryogenically frozen, he was actually cremated.
