American-born writer, T. S. Eliot, died at the age of 77. He was one of the most influential poets of the 20th century and in 1948 won the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 1927 he was given British citizenship and converted to Anglicanism.

American actress, Diane Lane, was born in New York City.

Prime minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill, died at the age of 90. He was one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century, having been the prime minister of the United Kingdom during the Second World War.

Hindi was declared as the official language of India.
February
1st
American actor, Brandon Lee, was born in California. He was the son of the legendary martial arts master and actor, Bruce Lee. He was tragically shot dead during the filming of the movie, The Crow.

Romanian footballer, Gheorghe Hagi, was born in Sacele. He is considered as one of the best players of the 1980's and 1990's and probably the best Romanian footballer in history.

American musician, Nat King Cole, died at the age of 45. He was a very popular musician from the 1930's up until his death.

Gambia became an independent nation. It was previously part of the United Kingdom.

Malcolm X was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City by three members of the Nation of Islam.

British actor and comedian, Stan Laurel, died at the age of 74. He is famous for having been part of the comedy duet act of Laurel and Hardy, which enjoyed tremendous worldwide success throughout the first half of the 20th century and for much of the rest as reruns are still aired today.

The first American combat troops arrived in Vietnam.

American actress, Sarah Jessica Parker, was born in Nelsonville, Ohio, USA. She is best known for her role in the TV series Sex and the City.

American Actor, Robert Downey Jr., was born in New York city. In the late nineties his career was plagued by drug abuse, which apparently he has managed to kick during the last few years.

American comedian, Martin Lawrence, was born in New York City. He gained fame after he became the host of the Def Comedy jam - stand up comedy show, which aired on the HBO channel. He has since stared in many hit comedy and action movies.

American journalist, Edward R. Murrow, died at the age of 57. He was a pioneer of early television news broadcasting and a stanch enemy of Senator Joseph McCarthy. His news reports helped bring about the end of the McCarthy era.
May
12th
The Soviet spacecraft Luna 5 crashed on the Moon. It was an unmanned space mission that was supposed to make a soft landing on the Moon.

A Pakistani Airlines aircraft crashed while landing at Cairo airport. 121 people died in the crash.

American model and actress, Brooke Shields, was born in New York City. She was one of the best known faces of the 1970's - 1980's and, in 1980, stared in the huge box office hit 'The Blue Lagoon'.

Contraception, by married couples, was legalized for the first time in the United States (Connecticut).

British actress, Elizabeth Hurley, was born in Basingstoke.

American film director, Larry Wachowski, was born in Chicago. Along with his brother, Andrew, he is most known for having been the co -writer and director of the Matrix movie series.

The first ever photographs of Mars were taken by the Mariner 4 space probe.

16th
The Mont Blanc Tunnel which links France and Italy officially opened to traffic. Construction of the tunnel began in 1957 and is managed by one Italian and one French company.

The Soviet Union launched the Zond 3 probe. Its mission was to complete a lunar flyby while taking photographs of the moon. It was the first of this series of Soviet spacecraft to successfully complete its mission.

Two civil rights protesters were shot and killed by the local sheriff in Hayneville, Alabama.

American musician, Saul Hudson, was born in London, England. He is a guitarist best known as the former lead guitarist of the hard rock band Guns N' Roses.

Canadian-British boxer, Lennox Lewis, was born in London, England. He was the heavyweight champion of the world and along with Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield, he has won the Heavyweight Championship on three separate occasions

American actor, Charlie Sheen, was born in New York City. He was born Carlos Irwin Estevez, and is the son of actor Martin Sheen, as well as the brother of actors Emilio Estevez, Ramon Estevez Jr. and Renee Estevez.

President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, was born in Damascus. He is the son of former president Hafez al-Assad.

American musician, Moby, was born in Darien, Connecticut. His birth name is Richard Melville Hall. He has enjoyed a huge pop career in the last decade which is rivalled by few other musicians.

American basketball player, Scottie Pippen, was born in Hamburg, Arkansas. He is considered as one of the great NBA players of the 90's, who was overshadowed by the talent of Michael Jordan.

American musician, C-Jay Ramone, was born in Queens, New York. He is best known for being the bassist for punk rock group The Ramones from 1989 to 1996.

Pope Paul VI announced that the church's ecumenical council agreed that the Jews were not to be collectively held responsible for the killing of Christ. The declaration in essence reversed the declaration that had been made in 1215 by Pope Innocent III.

Dutch model and actress, Famke Janssen, was born in Amstelveen, The Netherlands. She was a top fashion model before migrating to an acting career. She is famous for her participation in the James Bond move, GoldenEye, as well as the X-Men series of movies.

French composer, Edgard Varese, died at the age of 82.

The soap opera Days of Our Lives debuted on the NBC channel in the United States. It is still in production 41 years later (2006).

Race car driver, Eddie Irvine, was born in Conlig, Northern Ireland.

After a coup, Joseph Desire Mobutu, became president of Congo (he renamed the country to Zair in 1971, it was later renamed again to the Democratic Republic of Congo). He would rule the country for 32 years before being overthrown by rebels in 1997.
December

Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras lift mutual excommunications that had existed ever since 1054.

Legendary rock band, The Grateful Dead, played their first ever concert, in San Francisco.

Speed limits were applied on all roads in the United Kingdom. The limit was set at 70 miles per hour. Prior to this, there were no speed limits in place.

Ferdinand Marcos became President of the Philippines. He served as president from 1965 to 1986. While he was elected in 1965, in 1972 he declared martial law which he didn't lift until 1981. He was, however, re-elected, the same year and served another term as president until the next elections were marred by tampering scandals which eventually led to his downfall.
