Austrian automotive engineer, Ferdinand Porsche, died at the age of 75. He is is best remembered for his design of the original Volkswagen Beetle and for his contributions to advanced German tank design. He also founded the sports car manufacturing company with the same name.

British musician, Phil Collins, was born in London. He was one of the most popular musicians of the 1980's with a hugely successful carreer both as a solo artist and as a member of the group Genesis.

British footballer, Kevin Keegan, was born in Armthorpe. He is considered as one of the greatest British footballers of all time.

British actress, Jane Seymour, was born in Hayes.

The first Pan American Games opened in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Russian chess grandmaster, Anatoly Karpov, was born in Zlatoust, Soviet Union. We was world champion in chess for ten years, before loosing to Garry Kasparov.

British musician, Bonnie Tyler, was born in Skewen, Wales. She was a popular singer of the late 1970's and 1980's. She is most known for her hit song, Total Eclipse of the Heart.

Joseph Ratzinger, the current Pope Benedict XVI, was ordained as a priest.

Australian actor, Geoffrey Rush, was born in Toowoomba, Queensland. His debut was in the Australian film Hoodwink in 1981, however he did not achieve fame until 1996 when he starred in the critically acclaimed movie, Shine. From that point on, his career exploded into stardom.

American actress, Anjelica Huston, was born in Santa Monica, California. While she has starred in numerous highly successful and critically acclaimed movies, she is most known for her role as Morticia Addams in The Addams Family movies. She is also known for her long time relationship with Jack Nicholson from 1973 to 1989.

Professional wrestler and politician, Jesse Ventura, was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was a star of professional wrestling in the United States who was later elected Governor of the state of Minnesota.

King Abdullah I of Jordan was assassinated, by a Palestinian terrorist, while he was attending Friday prayers in Jerusalem.

The United States, Australia and New Zealand signed a mutual defence treaty. While the 3 countries had fought alongside each other on several occasions, the treaty was invoked for the first time ever after the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States. The treaty was invoked by Australia.

American actor, Michael Keaton, was born in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. He achieved stardom when he was cast to play the role of Batman in Tim Burton's blockbuster movie.

Spanish movie director, Pedro Almodovar, was born in Calzada de Calatrava, Spain. He is considered as one of the top directors of the 20th century and one of the few to have been able to bridge the gap between American and Spanish cinema.

American actor, Mark Hamill, was born in Oakland, California. He is best known for his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Italian actress and politician, Cicciolina, was born in Budapest. She was elected to the Italian parliament in 1987, the first ever performer of hardcore pornography to do so.

Legendary baseball player, Joe DiMaggio, announced his retirement. He is considered as one of baseball's greatest stars whose stardom stranscended the boundaries of the sport. He is also known for his marriage to actress Marilyn Monroe.
