British writer, George Orwell, died at the age of 47. He was born Eric Arthur Blair and used George Orwell as his pen name. He is considered as one of the best English language writers of the 20th century. His most famous books are Animal Farm and 1984.

India was officially declared a republic and Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as its first president.

American actress, Morgan Fairchild, was born in Texas. She became famous after staring in the hit television series, Dallas.

American singer, Natalie Cole, was born in Los Angeles. She is the daughter of the famous musician, Nat King Cole.

15th
The Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China signed a mutual defence treaty.

Irish director, Neil Jordan, was born in County Sligo. He is most known for having directed the popular films, The Crying Game and Interview with the Vampire.

Walt Disney's animated feature film Cinderella premiered in the United States.

American film producer and director, Jerry Zucker, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is most known for his production of the hit spoof comedies, Airplane and Top Secret.

American actor, William H. Macy, was born in Miami, Florida. He is best known for his role as Jerry Lundegaard in the critically acclaimed film, Fargo.

In South Africa, the 'Group Areas Act' was passed, officially segregating races. The act was repealed 41 years later, in 1991.

American comedian, Jay Leno, was born in New Rochelle, New York. He is most known for hosting the famous late night television show, The Tonight Show.

The first ever Formula One Grand Prix was held in Silverstone Circuit, England.

American singer and musician, Stevie Wonder, was born in Saginaw, Michigan.

Brazilian actress, Sonia Braga, was born in Maringa, Parana. She was a popular actress in her home country, before moving on to Hollywood where she continued to enjoy popular success. She is most known for her roles in Kiss of the Spider Woman as well as her romantic involvement with the famed actor/director Robert Redford.

The Korean War began.

North Korean troops captured the city of Seoul. The city was liberated by United nations troops a couple of months later, but was subsequently recaptured in January 1951 by Chinese and North Korean forces. On March 1951 the city was recaptured, for the final time, by United Nations troops.

The legislature of Israel passed the Law of Return which granted all Jews the right to immigrate to Israel.

British entrepreneur, Richard Branson, was born in Shamley Green, Surrey. He is known worldwide for his Virgin brand of products and services.

American computer engineer, Steve Wozniak, was born in San Jose, California. He was the co-founder of the Apple Computer Corporation.

United States armed forces landed at Incheon, Korea.

American actor, Bill Murray, was born in Chicago, Illinois. Besides an actor he is also a comedian, director, producer and poet. He rose to glory when he starred in, and wrote for, the hit comedy series, Saturday Night Live, between the years 1977 and 1980.

During the course of the Korean War, United Nations troops recapture Seoul from the North Koreans.

1st
American actor, Randy Quaid, was born in Texas, USA. He became famous by his starring in several of the National Lampoon's Vacation movies and got his big break when he participated in the hit movie Independence Day.

Canadian comedian, John Candy, was born in Toronto, Ontario. He was one of the most popular comedians of his time. He died from a heart attack in 1994.
November
17th
The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was enthroned as at the age of fifteen.

The People's Republic of China entered the Korean War when it sent thousands of troops to fight United Nations forces.
