American film director, Michael Mann, was born in Chicago. He is one of the most commercially successful directors of the 20th century having produced such hits as Starsky and Hutch and Miami Vice.

American actor, Joe Pesci, was born in New Jersey. He got his breakthrough in 1980 when he starred along with Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese's hit film, Raging Bull.

Members of the White Rose group were executed in Nazi Germany. It was a non-violent resistance group in Germany that campaigned for active opposition to the Nazi regime.

British musician, George Harrison, was born in Liverpool. He was best known for being one of the legendary rock band, The Beatles. He died as a result of lung cancer from which he was suffering since the mid 1990's.

Canadian film director, David Cronenberg, was born in Toronto, Ontario. He is a highly acclaimed director, whose films borderline on the psychological horror-science fiction genre.

American gangster, Frank Nitti, committed suicide at the age of 59. He is most known as having been the top henchmen of Al Capone and later a mob boss in his own right.

Russian composer and pianist, Sergei Rachmaninoff, died in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 70. His music was banned in the Soviet Union for many years.

Greek musician, Vangelis (Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou), was born in Volos, Greece. He is best known for his theme for the movie, The Chariots of Fire, for which he won an academy award, as well as the theme of the movie Blade Runner.

American actor, Christopher Walken, was born in Queens, New York. He is considered a cult figure and has a following of fans more loyal than most actors. He received wide recognition with his Oscar winning performance in the movie "The Deer Hunter".

Swiss chemist, Albert Hoffman, synthesized LSD, lysergic acid diethylamide. Regulation of the substance began in the mid 1960's after a wide range of research projects had been conducted on it.

The mass grave of Polish prisoners of war is discovered in the woods of Katyn. They were executed by Soviet forces in what has been historically known as the "Katyn Wood Massacre". Over 20 thousand Polish reserve officers were killed each with a bullet in the head.

A Military coup took place in Argentina, ousting then president, Ramon Castillo.

German Nazis executed 1180 Jews at the city of Berezhany, Ukraine. The entire population of the Jewish ghetto were led to face death at city's old Jewish graveyard, where they were shot and then dumped into a mass grave.

British actor, Malcolm McDowell, was born in Leeds. He is most known for his portrayal of Alex DeLarge in the cult film A Clockwork Orange, by the director Stanley Kubrick.

American musician, Barry Manilow, was born in Brooklyn, New York City. He is most known for his hit songs, I Write The Songs, Mandy and most of all, Copacabana.

5th
The battle of Kursk took place. It was the largest tank battle in history. It was fought between Soviet and German forces and resulted in a decisive Soviet victory.

British musician, Christine McVie, was born in Birmingham. She is famous for having been a member of the popular band Fleetwood Mac.

During the course of the Second World War, allied forces captured the Italian city of Palermo.

24th
During the course of the Second World War, Operation Gomorrah began. The operation called for the continual (day and night) bombing of the city of Hamburg. The operation lasted until the end of November the same year, by which time more than 9000 tons of explosives were dropped on the city. More than 30,000 people died and approximately 280000 buildings were destroyed.

Benito Mussolini was forced out of office by the Italian Grand Council, which he had created, and was replaced by Pietro Badoglio.

British bombers conducted operation 'Gomorrah' in which the city of Hamburg was bombed. The severe bombing caused a firestorm that killed more than 42000 civilians.

Pakistani general, Pervez Musharraf, was born in Delhi, India. After the partition of India, his parents migrated to Pakistan. He assumed leadership of Pakistan on October 12, 1999 after a coup d'etat.

American actor, Robert De Niro, was born in New York City. He is considered by many to be the greatest actor of his generation.
September

Allied forces invaded mainland Italy for the first time since the beginning of the second world war.

The Jewish prisoners of the Nazi concentration camp of Sobibor (Poland) were massacred after a failed revolt.

Spanish singer, Julio Iglesias, was born in Madrid, Spain. He is Spain's top selling singer of all time and has sold over 250,000,000 records worldwide.

President of Poland, Lech Walesa, was born in Popowo, Poland. He was one of the founders of 'Solidarity', the Soviet bloc's first independent trade union. He was also the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and won the 1990 presidential elections to become president of Poland.

The new government of Italy sided with the Allies and declared war on Germany.

French actress, Catherine Deneuve, was born in Paris. She is considered as one of the most successful European actresses who never embraced holywood.

American filmaker, Bruce Paltrow, was born in New York. He was a successful producer and director in holywood and the father of the holywood star, Gwyneth Paltrow.

British guitarist, Keith Richards, was born in Kent. He is best known as being of the founding members of the legendary rock group, The Rolling Stones.

British actor, Ben Kingsley, was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire. His birth name is, Krishna Bhanji. He was awarded knighthood in the 2001for his contribution to film and theatre.
