The Enabling Act was passed by Germany's parliament. It enabled Adolf Hitler and his cabinet to enact laws without the participation of the parliament (Reichstag).

The gold standard was abolished in the United States. The gold standard required that all money printed must be backed buy the equivalent amount of gold in reserve.

American actor, Gene Wilder, was born in Milwaukee. He was the son of Russian Jewish immigrants who is most known for his numerous collaborations comedian Richard Pryor as well as his numerous appearances in films of the famed comedy director, Mel Brooks.

In Kansas City, Missouri, four FBI agents as well as the captured gangster, Frank Nash, were gunned down by gangsters in an attempt to free Nash.

All political parties, except the Nazi Party, were declared outlawed in Germany.

French director and actor, Roman Polanski, was born in Paris, France. In 1969 his wife Sharon Tate was murdered by members of the Manson Family cult. Later on in 1978, he pleaded guilty to having sexual intercourse with a minor, but fled to Europe while he was on bail.

Germany withdrew its membership from the League of Nations.

The United States and the Soviet Union established formal diplomatic relations.

5th
Prohibition ended in the United States. It had been enacted in 1919 and in some US states prohibition was still enforced long after it was abolished. The state of Mississippi was the last state to repeal prohibition, in 1966.
