American actor, Gene Hackman, was born in California. He decided to become an actor after his 30th year of age and was a close friend with Dustin Hoffman along with whom it is said was voted 'Least likely to succeed'.

10th
American actor, Robert Wagner, was born in Detroit. He is most known for staring in the television crime series of the 1980's, Hart to Hart.

18th
The planet, Pluto, was discovered by the American astronomer, Clyde Tombaugh. In the late 20th and early 21st century Pluto was declassified from a 'planet' to a 'dwarf planet'.

2nd
English writer, D. H. Lawrence, died at the age of 44. He was one of the most important, as well as controversial, English writers of the 20th century. In 1928 he wrote the novel Lady Chatterley's Lover, which sparked a row of criticism and banning which lasted more than 30 years later, but was also instrumental in combating the censorship laws which governed publications up until the 1960's.

American cinema legend, Steve McQueen, was born in Beech Grove, Indiana, USA.

The cities of Constantinople and Angora are renamed to Istanbul and Ankara respectively.

The planet Pluto is officially named. It had been discovered a few months earlier by astronomer Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in Arizona, USA.

American film legend, Clint Eastwood, was born in San Francisco, California.
June
17th
US President Herbert Hoover signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff into law. By the terms of the tariff, high taxation was imposed on a vast number of imported items, in an effort to stem the effects of the Great Depression within the United States. Due to reactions by several countries, the tariff had the opposite effect and in actuality worsened the situation as exports of US goods fell by almost 50%.

American billionaire and politician, Ross Perot, was born in Texas. He is best known for having been the outsider candidate for the office of President of the United States in 1992 and 1996. In the 1992 election, he received 18.9% of the popular vote, making him the most successful Independent presidential candidate since Theodore Roosevelt in 1912.
July
30th
The national football team of Uruguay won the first Football World Cup, defeating Argentina 4 goals to 2. The final was held in the capital city of Uruguay, Montevideo.

5th
Astronaut, Neil Armstrong, was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Along with fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin, he was the first human to set foot on the Moon.

American businessman, George Soros, was born in Budapest, Hungary. He is considered as one of the most successful financial speculators of modern times and is one of the richest men in the world.

British actor, Sean Connery, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is best known as the first actor to portray the famous spy, James Bond.

American musician, Ray Charles, was born in Albany, Georgia. He overcame his blindness to become a huge musical star worldwide. He was not born blind, but began loosing his sight at the age of four and had lost it completely by the age of seven.

1st
Irish actor, Sir Richard Harris, was born in Limerick, Ireland. He was one of the most famous and talented Irish actors of all time and a peer of fellow British actors Albert Finney, Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole.

President of Syria, Hafez al-Assad, was born in Qardaha in western Syria. He was the president of Syria from 1971 to 2000.

Zairian dictator. Joseph Mobutu, was born in Lisala, Belgian Congo. He rose to power in Zair after a coup d'etat and remained in power for 32 years, up until his death from prostate cancer in 1997.

American astronaut , Michael Collins, was born in Rome, Italy. He was the command module pilot of the mission that landed fellow astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon.
November
2nd
Haile Selassie was crowned emperor of Ethiopia. He was one of the most respected monarchs around the world and 'Messiah' of the Rastafari movement. Under his leadership Ethiopia enjoyed a status of prestige around the world.

3rd
French film director, Jean-Luc Godard, was born in Paris. He is considered as one of the most influential French directors of the 20th century.

Swiss actor, Maximilian Schell, was born in Vienna, Austria. He was a top name in Hollywood during the 1960's and 1970's, having stared in such movies as 'A Bridge Too Far'.
