Italian director, Sergio Leone, was born in Rome. He is considered to have been one of the greatest Western directors of all time. His spaghetti western films are considered as true classics of the genre.

Mother Teresa arrived in Calcutta where she began her life's work amongst the poor and diseased people of India.

The comic book character, Tintin, created by Herge, made his first appearance in a children's supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle.

American civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr, was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He was one of the most famous civil rights activists who promoted non-violence and equality between races. He received the Nobel Peace Prize prior to his assassination in 1968.

The famous cartoon, Popeye the Sailor Man, appeared for the first time in the Thimble, Comic Strip Theater.

Leon Trotsky, one of the foremost Soviet revolutionaries, was exiled from the Soviet Union, following a power struggle within the communist party. He remained in exile for the rest of his life and was assassinated by the Soviet agent while living in Mexico.
February
15th
British race car driver, Graham Hill, was born in London. He was one of the great motor racing champions of the 20th century, who had won the Formula One World Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He died in 1975 when his private aeroplane crashed in foggy weather.

The first Academy Awards were awarded. The first movie to ever receive the 'Best Picture' award was 'Wings', a 1927 silent movie about World War I.

Czech writer, Milan Kundera, was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia. He is best known for his book "The Unbearable Lightness of Being".

British actor, Sir Nigel Hawthorne, was born in Coventry, England. His most famous role was that of Sir Humphrey Appleby in the British TV series, Yes, Minister and its sequel Yes, Prime Minister.

Greece's National Football team played its first ever match, against Italy, resulting in a 1-4 defeat.

Belgian born actress, Audrey Hepburn, was born in Brussels. She was one of the most beloved stars of Hollywood and one of the most celebrated actress around the world. She is most remembered for her role of 'Holly Golightly' in 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's, although she was already a huge star by that time.

The first Academy Awards were presented in Hollywood, California. The first movie to win the best movie category was 'Wings'.

The first ever talking cartoon of 'Mickey Mouse' was released.

Approximately 100 persons of Jewish descent were killed in Palestine by Arab Palestinians.

Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, was born in Cairo, Egypt. He was the recipient of the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize alongside Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin. A controversial figure who was considered as a heroic fighter by his supporters and brutal terrorist by his enemies.

Greek actress, Irene Papas, was born in Chiliomodi, Corinth, Greece.

The first passenger flight between the east and west coast of the United states begins, connecting New York to Los Angeles.

24th
The stock market of the New York Stock Exchange crashed. In what is known as "Black Thursday" the market crashed in an event that is considered by many historians the prelude of the great depression.

In New York City's Museum of Modern Art opened to the public for the first time.
December
13th
Canadian actor, Christopher Plummer, was born in Toronto. He is widely considered as Canada's most talented stage and film actor.
