German, Eva Braun, was born in Munich. She is known for having been the mistress of Adolf Hitler. Braun and Hitler committed suicide together on the 30th of April 1945, as Berlin was falling.

The last Emperor of China, Pu Yi, abdicated.

14th
Arizona was admitted to the Union as the 48th US state.
March
12th
The Girl Guides was founded in the United States. It was later renamed to the Girl Scouts of America.
April
10th
The RMS Titanic began its voyage from the dock of Southampton, England. It was destined to sink four days later in one of the most known and dramatic shipwrecks in history.

14th
The British ocean liner RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Over 1500 people died in the shipwreck. The site of the shipwreck was discovered in 1985 by a joint American-French expedition.

Irish author, Bram Stoker, died at the age of 65 in London England. He wrote several popular novels in his lifetime, the most famous of which is Dracula.

The Novarupta volcano in Alaska erupted. It was the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century.

The film studio, Universal Pictures, was founded.

American artist, Harry Holtzman, was born in New York. He was one of the most influential abstract artist of the 20th century.

Italian biologist, Salvador Luria, was born in Turin. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1969 and is considered as one of the fathers of molecular biology.

United States marines invaded Nicaragua.

American actor, Gene Kelly, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Along with Fred Astaire, he was one of the most celebrated musical actors of the 20th century.
September

American, David Packard, was born in Pueblo, Colorado. He was an electrical engineer and businessman who co founded the Hewlett-Packard corporation.

29th
Italian film director, Michelangelo Antonioni, was born in Ferrara, Italy. He is widely considered as one of the most influential directors of the 20th century.
October
8th
The First Balkan War began as Montenegro declared war on Turkey.
October
17th
Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia declared war on the Ottoman Empire, marking the beginning of the First Balkan War.
December
3rd
The first Balkan War ended.
