13th
American physicist, William Shockley, was born in London, England. Along with fellow scientists John Bardeen and Walter Houser Brattain, he co-invented the transistor and in 1956 was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for it.
March
1st
British actor, David Niven, was born in London. He was one of the most popular British actors of his time who also served in the Second World War with the British Commandos and also was among the British forces that landed at Normandy.
April
21st
American author, Mark Twain, died at the age of 75. His actual name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, and is one of the most read authors of all time, having written such literary classics as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".

The Earth passed through the tail of Halley's Comet.
June
11th
French explorer and ecologist, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, was born in Saint Andre de Cubzac, France. He was one of the most famous explorers and oceanographers in history. The documentaries of his explorations aboard the Calypso have been viewed by millions of people around the world. He was also the co-inventor of the aqua-lung.
July
14th
American animator, William Hanna, was born in Melrose, New Mexico. Along with Joseph Barbera he was the co-founder of the famous animation studio, Hanna-Barbera.
August
13th
British nurse, Florence Nightingale, was born in Florence, Italy. She was named after the city of her birth, and became known as the pioneer of modern nursing when in 1854 she and a staff of 38 nurses were sent to offer their services to the battlefront of the Crimean War.
September
1st
The Brazilian 'Sport Club Corinthians Paulista', was founded. It is one of the most popular Sports clubs in Brazil. It is most commonly referred to only as Corinthians, a name chosen as homage to the British club 'Corinthians'.
October
5th
A republican revolution deposed the monarchy in Portugal and declared the country a republic.
November
7th
Aviation pioneers, the Wright Brothers, undertake the first ever air freight transfer from Dayton, Ohio, to Columbus, Ohio. The transfer was commisioned by department store owner Max Moorehouse.
