Greek athlete, Spiridon Louis, was born in Marousi, Athens. He was the winner of the first modern-day Marathon at the 1896 Athens Summer Olympics.

Bulgarian revolutionary, Vasil Levski, was executed at the age of 35. He is one of Bulgaria's greatest national heroes, who led the revolution of Bulgaria against Ottoman rule.

Italian tenor, Enrico Caruso, was born in Naples. He was one of the most famous (if not the most famous) tenors in the history of opera.

Russian composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff, was born in Semyonovo. He is regarded as one of the most influential pianists and piano composers of the twentieth century, whose music was banned in the Soviet Union for many years.

American, Johns Hopkins, died at the age of 78. He was an important philanthropist and businessman as well as the founder of the highly prestigious, Johns Hopkins University.
