Scottish anthropologist, Sir James George Frazer, was born in Glasgow. He is considered as one of the most important scholars of mythology and comparative religion. His most known work is, The Golden Bough, which is a study of ancient cults and myths and the ways in which they relate to early Christian practices.

The Republican Party of the United States was founded.
March
28th
United Kingdom and France declare war on Russia marking the beginning of the War of the Crimean.
July
6th
The first convention of the U.S. Republican Party took place in Jackson, Michigan.

12th
American inventor, George Eastman, was born in Waterville, New York. He was the inventor of the roll film and the founder of the Eastman Kodak Corporation.
September
20th
At the start of the Crimean War, British and French troops defeat Russian troops in the vicinity of the River Alma in the Crimea.

27th
The steamship Arctic sank with over 300 people on board. It was the first major ship disaster in the Atlantic Ocean.

Irish writer, Oscar Wilde, was born in Dublin, Ireland. He is considered as one of the most important literary figures of the Victorian era. He was imprisoned for 2 years, due to his homosexual encounters with numerous young boys. Apart from his numerous plays, he wrote only one novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, which is considered as one of the classics of Modern Western literature.

Florence Nightingale and a staff of 38 nurses were sent to offer their services to the battlefront of the Crimean War.
