This year in history
In the year 1853

	January 16th	French businessman, Andre Michelin, was born in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Along with his brother they were the founders of the Michelin tyre company.
	March 6th	Giuseppe Verdi's opera, La Traviata, premiered in Venice.
	March 14th	Swiss painter, Ferdinand Hodler, was born in Berne. He was one of the most famous Swiss painters of all time and one of the most prominent painters of the realism movement of the 19th century.
	March 17th	Austrian physician, Christian Doppler, died at the age of 50. His discoveries paved the way to the creation of the medical imaging and blood flow measurement instruments used in modern medicine.
	March 30th	Dutch painter, Vincent van Gogh, was born in Zundert, Netherlands. One of the most celebrated painters on the 19th century, he created over two thousand works of art in a period of ten years. He is thought to have been mentally ill and committed suicide on the 29th of July, 1890.
	July 2nd	The Crimean War began with the invasion of Turkey by forces of the Russian army.
	August 28th	Russian engineer, Vladimir Shukhov, was born in Graivoron. He was one of the most important engineers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
