In the year 1841
January
14th
French painter, Berthe Morisot, was born in Cher, France. She was one of the most influential impressionist painters of the 19th century.
January
20th
British forces occupied the island of Hong Kong. Under the treaty of Nanking the island was officially ceded to Great Britain in 1842. On July 1997 the United Kingdom's rule over Hong Kong ended, at which time governorship of the island back to China.
February
25th
French painter, Pierre Auguste Renoir, was born Limoge. He was one of the a leading artists of the Impressionist movement. In 1990 one of his paintings, Bal au moulin de la Galette, Montmartre, was sold for 78 million US dollars.
April
4th
US president William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia, He was the first US president to die in office. He was president for only a month.
July
17th
The first issue of Punch magazine was published in London. Punch was a popular humor magazine which was published in England until 1992.
August
21st
The Venetian blind was first patented in the United States.
September
8th
Czech composer, Antonin Dvorak, was born in Nelahozeves near Prague. He is considered as one of the great composers of the late 19th century.
