Irish inventor, John Philip Holland, was born in Liscannor. He was the engineer who invented and constructed the first submarine.

Italian violinist and composer, Nicolo Paganini, died at the age of 68. He is considered as one of the greatest violinists who ever lived.
July
4th
The first transatlantic passenger cruiser, MS Britannia, departs from Liverpool, England, bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia.
November
14th
French painter, Claude Monet, was born in Paris. He is one of the most famous Impressionist painters. The Impressionism movement derives its name from the title of one of his paintings, Impression, Sunrise.
